Compactor at Olympic View Transfer Station broken again

Olympic View Transfer Station remains closed as repairs are made to the compactor for the second time this month. The amount of trash that can be processed has been drastically reduced.

There’s currently no estimate of when the part will be fixed, but the solid waste division said in an announcement that it anticipates reopening sometime this week.

A different part broke after one piece of the compactor broke March 30 and was repaired shortly after. The county is asking that people wait to bring trash to Olympic View Transfer Station until the problem is resolved.

The second hydraulic cylinder failed, after the first failed a couple of weeks ago. Now public works is waiting on parts for the seal kit, said Kevin Bevelhimer, transfer systems program supervisor at the solid waste division.

This time the garbage accumulation isn’t as bad as it was during the last break when it was nearly spilling out of the facility. Instead of trash being compacted into shipping containers to be taken away by train, trash is loaded from the top into the containers to be driven by truck to another facility to be compacted. This process is much lengthier and doesn’t get rid of the same volume of garbage that’s possible with the compactor.

Currently, public works is in the process of obtaining another compactor, likely next year, Bevelhimer said. Though with the equipment failures, it’s possible that the timeline could be moved up.

No home collection service interruptions are anticipated at this time, according to Kitsap County. The transfer station is still processing garbage from the collection services.

Recycling and garbage facilities are currently not affected by this. They remain open regular hours.
