England were due to play in their crimson away kit, but the decision has been made for the Lionesses to play in their white home strip but with maroon socks.

England will wear their white home strip against Northern Ireland to avoid a colour blind kit clash.

The Lionesses will wear white shirts, white shorts and maroon socks to help improve viewing for those who are colour blind.

The green home kit of Northern Ireland mixed with England’s crimson away number would have caused lots of problems because red and green are the two most problematic colours.

This was why Northern Ireland wore white in their first two games and why the Lionesses did the same thing when the two sidees met earlier this year in Belfast.

Colour blindness affects one in 12 men and one in 200 women. Specialised cells in the back of the eye called cones detect colour. There are three types of cones, which detect red, green and blue. In colour blind people, one type of cone does not work as well as the others, or may not work at all.

The Lionesses and Northern Ireland have made a small change for this match that could actually help a lot of people.

You would hope that things like this will change the precedent, and we will see more kit changes like this going forward.
