Demi Lovato was quizzed about why she and a number of her fellow Disney Channel stars wore purity rings, joking that hers breaking was a “sign” to move on with her life.

The star, who recently celebrated her 30th birthday and the release of her new album Holy Fvck, explained that she’d been wearing her ring from a young age after being given it by her church.

Someone wearing a purity ring is typically seen as a religious vow to abstain from sex until marriage.

She was known to wear one along with fellow Disney child stars Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brothers among others.

But Demi, who starred in the Camp Rock movies and Sonny with a Chance alongside other Disney Channel shows and movies, explained that there came a point in her life when she decided to ditch it.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she was asked about the “wave” of Disney Channel stars wearing the rings.

Demi laughed as she was quizzed about it and said: “I had a purity ring that came from my church, like way before Disney Channel even happened. I was like 11 or 12, and that shouldn’t have even been implemented on 11 or 12 year olds.

“But I was like ‘OK, I’ll do this, whatever’. That quickly went out the window at a certain point and then I left the others to have their purity adventures on their own.

“But to each their own, I don’t know, it was an interesting thing to come out publicly and say.”

Host Alexandra Cooper said she felt it was a way to cement the image of Disney Channel kids as “good kids” who “don’t do anything bad”.

Demi said: “I don’t know. I had one and I think I talked about it once and it caught a little bit of fire but definitely not as much as the other people wearing them and I quickly hushed about that when I started having sex.”

She added: “I think it actually literally broke because it was so cheap and then I was like, well that’s my sign.”

Demi was also asked about what it was like to be part of the Disney Channel phenomenon alongside the likes of Selena, Miley and the Jonas Brothers, and if they’d ever spoken about it.

She said: “I think over the years we talked about it for sure but I do have a project in the works where I want to talk to some of those people about their experiences, and other child stars as well.”

Demi has been incredibly open about her own struggles, battling addiction and an eating disorder.

She suffered a near-fatal overdose in 2018 following a relapse after six years of sobriety.

She shared her harrowing story in a documentary called Dancing with the Devil and has channeled her pain into her music.

Demi has been praised by her fans for helping them through their own struggles with her openness and honesty.
